What does it mean when a resident is ready to “graduate” from our residential campus?
Normally, it means that a girl has shown progress to the point that she can safely transition back into the community. This can include emotionally and interpersonally. But perhaps most importantly, she has shown a significant change in her mindset that allows her to live with a new level of stability.
One teen recently exhibited this type of transformation. She came to our campus with very low self esteem and self worth. By embracing her recovery, and working with the Gracehaven treatment team, she made a “180,” and began to care about herself and her future.
A large part of her healing journey involved being introduced to Jesus. When she came to our care, she said she wanted nothing to do with Him. The staff honored this request, but they lived a life that reflected Him in everything they did. She saw what a difference He made in their lives, and eventually chose on her own to accept God into her heart – a decision that will impact her for the rest of her life.
She came to the point where she could go home and begin an exciting new journey. At her graduation party, the staff celebrated who she is and showered her with love and encouragement. They played her favorite games, gave her personalized gifts, and everyone wrote on a big board what they loved about her (captured in the word art graphic). Though an admitted “tough cookie,” she cried throughout the party knowing she was leaving some of her favorite people at Gracehaven.
Our passion is to help young survivors “thrive with dignity in a renewed life.” Thank you for your partnership in making this a reality for so many teens we have the privilege to serve together.
