Social Media and Teenagers

April 10, 2026

story

Teenagers today have never known a world without the internet and social media. This digital world offers a wonderful array of opportunities and benefits on a global scale including access to information, learning opportunities and new hobbies or interests.

Teenagers especially see social media as a means of connecting and support. When surveyed about what social media means to them, they respond with comments like this:

  • “Helps me feel more accepted”
  • “Provides me with a support system”
  • “Helps me feel more connected to my friends”

However, there are inherent dangers with social media use, especially among teens whose brains are still developing. Though these are discussed less frequently, they pose risks in their social development including negative self-esteem and body image, anxiety and depression.

Along with this, sexual predators regularly use social media apps to meet and build relationships with teens. Imagine a teen who is feeling lonely or depressed meeting someone online who showers them with positive attention and good feelings. Quite often this is the first step in a predator grooming a teen for exploitation.

It’s critical that parents and caregivers stay informed about the dangers of the online world so that they know what to look for, and so that they can engage their children in conversations that promote safety online. It is never too early or too late to talk to a child about online safety.

Gracehaven’s Education Team facilitates a seminar called “Social Media and the Developing Brain.” This informative training explores in-depth how predators lure teens into exploitation. You will learn:

  • How to determine if your teen is at-risk for online exploitation
  • How to have the difficult but important conversations with your teen
  • Preventative action steps to take so it doesn’t happen at all

Our educators present this training in person or by Zoom for community groups, churches, workplaces — anywhere people want to learn. Please contact our team today to schedule a training: info@gracehavenohio.org.
